Credit is A Necessity

Your credit history is required for a mortgage, to obtain a credit card, to apply for a student loan, to get a cell phone, or to rent an apartment and set up utlitities. Your credit history is collected in your credit report. And, from your credit history, the credit bureaus calculate your credit scores. In today's world, your credit score is everything, low scores means higher interest rates and typically less that you can get credit. If you don't have credit you need to establish it.

Credit is Emotional

For most of us, bad credit is embarrassing, even if it is a result of a job layoff, or medical illness, or some other reason out of our control. Credit is also something that we compete with when we compare our credit scores with a spouse or co-worker or buddy. No matter what happened in your past, your credit can be restored from where it is now, and it can always be improved.

Credit is Evolving

Many years ago, credit was handled through a phone call to a "credit reference." If the "credit reference" gave you a good word then it was likely you got your credit. In today's world credit is tracked by your credit report, and your creditors report your credit history typically monthly or quarterly. The Credit laws and credit reports are complex and confusing and often require the assistance of a professional to review, establish, protect, repair, or restore.

My Credit Worthiness Is My Credit Score

Since the mid 1990's, credit report bureaus have been using something called your Credit Score. Credit scores typically are between 350 and 850. Harsh as it sounds, over time, credit scores have been proven to be an excellent predictor of the type of credit history you are going to have in the future. Sometimes our credit goes down for extenuating circumstances like job loss, or medical reasons, or a failed business. But for many people, a poor score now will likely mean a poor history in the future. By the way, an excellent credit score is generally anything over 700. Folks who have just gone through a bankruptcy will likely have scores in the low 500's or below.

Credit Is For Protecting

Another big deal in today's society is Identity Theft. We have a great deal of information on this problem and what you can do to ensure you are protected. Take a look at the following article for what steps to take should such a thing ever happen to you or someone you know.
